Lost Homes

CLAIBORNE W. EVANS, M.D., RESIDENCE: before 1893; 1003 12th St. corner of J St.; assessed in 1895 at $4,000 plus 6 lots at $1,225. It was sold to Dr. J. C. Robertson to eventually become doctors' offices with the Robertson Hospital constructed adjoining the house on J Street. The hospital was closed in 1950. Julian Mourot, architect.
 
Willis and Edna Bledsoe Mansion (1886).Once located at 1603 I st Modesto; assessed in 1887 at $6,500 plus 3 lots at $1,750. Bledsoe, born in Kentucky, owned extensive wheat farms in the Hickman area. The house was torn down in 1936 and replaced with the Shannon Funeral Home. Julian Mourot, architect.
Beard House that once stood at the corner of 12th and I, where the former post office building is now, 1870s. It was demolished in the early 1920s to make way for the first post office building.


 William Brown Residence, 1886; 903 J Street corner 9th St.; cost over $4,000. This two-story, wood framed structure with eleven rooms and hot and cold running water was designed and built for early Modesto photographer, William Brown, by Julian Mourot.
